Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA)

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (Amendment) Regulations 2003 came into force on 1st October 2004, better know as part 111 of the DDA.

The Act has been introduced to provide ease off access to all users, the benefits is to allow everyone the same access opportunities, including disabled and elderly people, those with pushchairs and young children, and customers with bags of shopping. Disabilities include not only limited physical mobility, but also visual and other sensory impairments.
Some of the key features are highlighted below:

  • Approach routes and areas adjacent to shop fronts should be kept free from obstructions, also too include the turning approach to a door
  • The entrance should have a level approach and flush threshold doors should be readily identifiable.
  • Door handles should be clearly colour-distinguished from their background and easy to use.
  • There is a minimum opening size for ease of access, please consult us for up to date dimensions
  • Avoid heavy, spring closing doors.
